This drawing was already in Kenneth Clark's collection when Grigson included an illustration of it in his 1943 book on Moore, where the media are described as chalk, wash and pen. This idea for a reclining figure was never realised in sculpture. It was not until after the Second World War that Moore could afford to buy tree trunks (usually elm) suitable for such large projects. This drawing is related to Reclining Figure 1938 (LH 186d).
