Moore began this Sketchbook in 1936, numbering pages in the upper right-hand corner and turning the book through 90 degrees according to his need for a portrait or a landscape format. The sketchbook lay in his studio and he drew in it over the next six years. The major additions were made in 1940 and 1942. This page is numbered '1' in Moore's hand at upper right
