1941
This exhibition of works by Henry Moore, John Piper and Graham Sutherland was held in the historic country house Temple Newsam in Leeds. In the foreword to the catalogue, Philip Hendy, Director of Leeds City Art Gallery, noted that the three artists "have much in common in their conception of art and in their attitude towards nature, and to see their works side by side should help us to understand both this common element and the strong individuality which is making each a leader”. In an article for Horizon, published in September 1941, Hendy also remarked on the setting of Temple Newsam and the quality of the light there, where large windows gave a view out to the landscape beyond: "Moore’s sculptures do not just stand in the light; they attract it; they set it to work. Turn them only a little in the light and the whole effect changes; there is a fresh and unexpected direction to the form, a different balance between the masses which compose it; there is a new composition in light and shade. These are the rewards of the sculptor who can think in the round.” ('Henry Moore', Horizon, p.201).
There are two versions of the catalogue for this exhibition in the Henry Moore Archive. The first gives the exhibition dates as 25 July - 28 August and includes 36 sculptures and 59 drawings by Moore. The second gives the dates as 25 July - 28 September and is a revision of the first, produced after some works were omitted when no exhibition space was found for them. It includes 28 sculptures and 58 drawings by Moore and the list of objects here has been made according to this revised catalogue. It has not yet been possible to identify all the drawings exhibited from the catalogue. A selection of works from the Temple Newsam exhibition toured in 1941-42, under the title 'Three British Artists' as an 'Art for the People' exhibition organised by the British Institute of Adult Education.

Exhibition Info: Configuration brings together a small, focused selection of sculpture, drawings and collages highlighting Henry Moore’s ceaseless investigation into form, material and volume. Throughout his lifetime, Moore collected objects such as bones, stones, shells and driftwood which he would turn over in his hands, build up, press into clay, cast, or photograph. This haptic practice saw Moore humanise these forms, and capture their relationship to the body both physical and imaginative.
