2009 Leeds Art Gallery, British Surrealism in Context: A Collectors Eye
10 July 2009 - 01 November 2009
Drawn from the Ruth and Jeffrey Sherwin Collection, the largest collection of British Surrealism in the country, 'British Surrealism in Context: A Collector's Eye' brings to Leeds Art Gallery something of the excitement and adventure of private collecting, exploring the collaboration between the institution and the private collector. Organised in groups, exemplifying an important aspect of Sherwin's collecting, the exhibition features clusters of sculptures with their respective drawings and studies, groupings of works with visual connections, and those dedicated to one specific artist.
Jeffrey Sherwin first met Henry Moore in 1977, when, as deputy chairman of Leisure in Leeds, he invited Moore and his daughter Mary to visit Leeds Art Gallery. He acquired his first two pieces after many visits to Hoglands in Perry Green.

Exhibition Info: Configuration brings together a small, focused selection of sculpture, drawings and collages highlighting Henry Moore’s ceaseless investigation into form, material and volume. Throughout his lifetime, Moore collected objects such as bones, stones, shells and driftwood which he would turn over in his hands, build up, press into clay, cast, or photograph. This haptic practice saw Moore humanise these forms, and capture their relationship to the body both physical and imaginative.
