Henry Moore: The Helmet
Heads is
the first major exhibition to explore Henry Moore’s fascination with armour. Based
upon new research into Moore’s visits to the Wallace Collection, which was only
three miles away from his studio in Hampstead, the show traces Moore’s
awareness of Wallace Collection objects as direct inspiration for his
celebrated Helmet Head sculptures. It
also illustrates the way armour and its representation imbues some of the core
themes of Moore’s work, including his reclining figures (LH 298 cast 00) and internal/external
forms.
This is the first time that Moore’s helmet-related works, comprising over sixty sketches, drawings, maquettes and full-sized sculptures in plaster, lead and bronze, have been comprehensively assembled and juxtaposed with the Renaissance armour that inspired them. In bringing Moore’s work together with objects from the Wallace Collection, the exhibition allows us to understand this unique encounter in a visually exhilarating way.
