Description: Catalogue to accompany exhibition of the same name, at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, at New York University, 12 February - 7 June 2015. 13 Reference to Henry Moore and The Henry Moore Foundation curatorial team in the Acknowledgements. 18 Moore listed in section titled From Ancient to Modern: A Chronology, Modern Periodization. Entry reads '1929-31 Henry Moore's sculpture inspired by Sumerian art is on view at the British Museum'. 27 Illus of Seated Figure 1929 cast concrete (LH 65). 28 CHI and AZARA write artists such as 'Henry Moore viewed Sumerian art as a powerful expression of original but lost artistic energies, and some of their works directly reflect Sumerian material. 47 Moore referenced in section titled From Ancient to Modern and Beyond. Sumerian anthropomorphic figurines, such as the Diyala statuettes considered the first artistic manifestation of the human figure, fascinated Surrealists before the Second World War. Artists 'saw in Sumerian art and poetry the translation of original energies and values that had been lost'. CHI and AZARA write for Giacometti and Moore 'the discovery of Sumerian sculpture was a revelation, and they felt that something essential to the understanding of human life was revealed in these objects' ... 'Moore found Sumerian sculpture to be the simplicity and expression of life', with no decorative trimmings which are the sign of decadence of flagging inspiration" (written by Moore in 1935 in his review of Christian Zervos's book L'art de la Mésopotamie one of the first publications on Sumerian "art" considered as art). Page 53 Endnote 23 refers to Moore. 223 Two of Moore's works are listed in Exhibition checklist: Seated Figure 1929 cast concrete (LH 65) and Half Figure II 1929 cast concrete (LH 66)."
