More InformationThis unique bronze cast combines head and helmet in a single unified image. It was partly the outcome of Moore's experiments in doing his own bronze casting. He poured wax into a tray, and when it had set, he cut up the wax into strips. The shape of the 'Head' was first made with a mixture of plaster and ground-up stoneware pottery ('grog'). This was then over-laid with strips of wax in the pattern that they are in the finished object, then followed a further covering of plaster and 'grog' after which the whole thing was baked in a kiln. The wax melted, leaving a hollow space for the molten bronze.
