In the 1944 and 1949 editions of Henry Moore: Sculpture and Drawings, Volume 1, this drawing is reproduced without a date being given; in the 1957 edition it is tentatively dated 1933. Read described it as being from one of Moore's sketchbooks, which accounts for the lack of both signature and date. Five of the sketches on this sheet appear in HMF 996, which remained unsigned and undated until 1985, and the date of both drawings was assigned only after careful study of works from 1933 with contemporary signatures.
