An invaluable page showing Moore's willingness to experiment with new ways of using conventional media. He had already tried out the possibilities of indelible pencil and wax crayons, and when the ballpoint pen was invented in the mid-1950s he tried that, going on to use it in the Sheep Sketchbook in 1972. He drew on tissue paper and on blotting paper and in 1981, even tried out a Korean writing block with its implements. Although it is impossible to date these observations with any certainty, the style of Moore's writing would seem to favour a date closer to 1936 rather than to 1942. Additionally, he would have included wax crayons in the experiments by the later date - drawings in the Shelter Sketchbook rely heavily on wax crayons.
