This has obvious affinities with HMF 1344 and 1365. The inset, in an entirely different style, may have been added later. The architect Walter Gropius (see inscription) had been commissioned to design a village college at Impington in Cambridgeshire and Moore was asked to do a sculpture for the site. The project was dropped for lack of funds but revived in 1944, when Moore made a number of sketches, some full-sized drawings and several terracotta models on the theme of the family group.
