The culmination of Moore's search for a satisfying expression of the meaning of internment: the prison bars and the barbed wire convey the sense of cruelty and there is fear in the wide-eyed gaze. This drawing is the basis for the lithograph CGM 3, which was to have been sold to raise money for the Spanish prisoners of war, but was never editioned.
