The heads in the upper half of the composition are grouped behind parallel lines of barbed wire, echoing Moore's sketches for Spanish Prisoner (HMF 1464). In the lower section one face peers apprehensively from a strange square helmet whilst another, helmetless, seems to have a great gash in its skull.
