More Information

Moore may have sketched this New Ireland shield or implement whilst on a visit to the Ethnographical Department of the British Museum. He made a more finished drawing and later transformed the images in HMF 1286, and used the design on a terracotta Small Relief: Lower Half of Upright Motive: Maquette No.1 c.1955 (see Wilkinson 1987, p.159) and on Upright Motive No.1: Glenkiln Cross 1955-56 (LH 377).
