2015-17 Spain, Henry Moore: Art in the Streets
A touring exhibition organised by the Henry Moore Foundation and Fundación Bancaria ‘la Caixa’, the charitable foundation of the La Caixa bank in Spain. Following the success of the 2013-14 tour of five Spanish cities, this exhibition brings six of Moore's monumental bronzes to modern and historical urban sites in new venues.
The exhibition presents the work of Henry Moore, recognized in Spain as one of the great modern masters, to new audiences outside the usual setting of the museum. The six large bronzes have all been inspired by nature - in some cases from found objects such as bones or flints. They are representative of some of the key motifs in Moore's art, his fascination with the reclining figure, with the idea of creative metamorphosis and the juxtaposition of internal and external forms.
Moore had a long-standing relationship with Spain. He found inspiration in Spanish art and culture throughout his career having first visited with his wife Irina in 1934. Later he met many of the great Spanish artists including Pablo Picasso and the sculptor Eduardo Chillida. In 1981, not long before he died, an important exhibition of Moore’s work was held at the Fundación Miró in Barcelona and at the Palacio de Velázquez in Madrid.
