More Information
The Waste Land is a major work of twentieth century literature, written by T.S. Eliot in 1921 in the aftermath of World War One. Journeys with The Waste Land explores the contemporary significance of T.S. Eliot’s seminal poem and the way it has resonated with artists over the years. The works selected  include historical and contemporary works by artists including Peter Blake, Cecil Collins, Jacob Epstein, Elizabeth Frink, Patrick Heron, David Jones, R.B. Kitaj, Percy Wyndham Lewis, Paul Nash, George Shaw, John Stezaker, Graham Sutherland and J.M.W. Turner. Henry Moore’s drawing has a resonance with the imagery in Eliot’s poem and its homage to El Greco, an artist whose work is often discussed in terms of its rejection of the materialist culture of modern life, is particularly appropriate to Eliot’s own state of mind at the time of the poem’s writing.
