Description: a review of the sculptural achievement of the first half of the twentieth century."
40-41etc.Plates 86-89(5 illus) Henry Moore.
In a chapter on The Innovators Moore's statement on not aiming to reproduce appearances is seen as important to an understanding of contemporary sculpture. His use of organic forms expressed through the medium of his material is noted together with landscape references in his work. The four sculptures dating between 1931 and 1951 depicted in the photographs are discussed briefly together with mention of other works and of Moore's vitality and sense of form. His preference for sculpture in the Open Air is mentioned in a section on Social Connotations and under Aesthetic Conclusions his semi-abstract figures are seen to satisfy the intuitions of our age."
