Description: Fourth in a series, For Sixth Forms, written by David SYLVESTER and Michael GILL and produced by Michael Gill.
Henry Moore and Alberto Giacometti. Shows King and Queen, 1952-1953 bronze and Glenkiln and works on Much Hadham estate. Moore is interviewed in Hoglands and in his studios, and is seen drawing, producing maquettes, carving, and working with his assistants. Moore comments on mixing the Human figure and Landscape, his use of Natural forms (stones, shells and bones) and the human figure, and the sculptor's concern for shape. Commentary also points out his preference for the Open Air, his use of drawing, the changes which may take place during the process of enlarging from maquettes. Moore is seen working on Reclining Figure: Festival, 1951 bronze from earlier B.B.C. films, and carving Upright Figure, 1956-1960 elm wood. Other works seen include U.N.E.S.C.O. Reclining Figure, 1957-1958 travertine marble, Upright Motives, etc. The 1960 Whitechapel exhibition (See 0006882) is seen briefly. The Giacometti section notes the multiple meaning in the work of two artists, with Moore related to nature, and Giacometti to man himself. Giacometti works regularly face to face with the model and does not enlarge his works or engage in the variations undertaken by Moore.
