In 1942 Moore was commissioned by the Rev. Walter Hussey, vicar of St Matthew's, Northampton, to produce a Madonna and Child to celebrate the church's fiftieth anniversary in 1943. Moore visited the church in 1942 and may have made some preliminary sketches then, but he did not begin work on the commission until the following year. Madonna and Child LH 226, carved in Hornton stone during 1943-44, was installed in Northampton in February 1944.
