Maroon cloth-covered notebook 240 x 188mm with white glossy paper cover originally containing 72 pages plus endpapers of off-white medium-weight wove 232 x 181mm. The artist drew on the front endpaper and the first 46 pages, and each page was numbered in pencil top left on the verso.

During 1982-83 a facsimile of the sketchbook was made by Kunstanstalt Max Jaffé in Vienna. Certain drawings had been removed and catalogued individually before 1982, and some of these were replaced in sequence: HMF 80(84)-80(89), 80(96), 80(97). The pages were then renumbered lower right recto and left verso from 1 to 84, beginning on the recto of the front endpaper, the remaining pages being left unnumbered. (The photographs predate this renumbering.) Since the renumbering of the sketchbook four drawings have been repositioned in what appears to be their original position: HMF 80(33) as p.1, HMF 80(5) as p.8, HMF 80(12) as p.9 and HMF 81(1) as p.27. Page 28 remains unaccounted for.
