Notebook No.4
Notebook No.4
Maroon paper-covered boards quarter-bound in red cloth 228 x 180mm; the book probably contained between 96 and 108 pages of cream lightweight laid paper 228 x 175mm in uneven signatures, including inside covers and endpapers. The back board is blind-stamped upper left upside down LAMLEY & CO./PUBLISHERS,/SOUTH KENSINGTON. The drawings were never signed or dated. The pages were numbered in pencil by the artist, usually upper right on the recto and upper left on the verso from 3 to121. Page 121 is numbered 123 on the verso, and the next extant page is numbered 126 on the recto; from thereon until page 180 the recto pages bear even numbers and the versos odd ones. From page 180 the remaining pages are unnumbered but the pagination given by Wilkinson in 1974 is retained. Many pages are now missing and others have become detached; blank pages or pages with only an inscription were not previously included in the catalogue raisonné or given AG numbers, though each carries an HMF archive number.
