Published as a portfolio with a text in French by Louis Aragon and twenty-four prints, one each by Pierre Alechinsky, Arman, Enrico Baj, Hans Bellmer, Ben, César, William Copley, André Francoise, Haïm Kern, Wifredo Lam, Roy Lichtenstein, Man Ray, André Masson, Sebastian Matta, Jean Messagier, Joan Miró, Henry Moore, Bert-Johnny Nilsson, Meret Oppenhiem, Roland Penrose, Niki de Saint Phalle, Dorothea Tanning, Gérard Titus Carmel and Paul Wunderlich.

660 x 510mm: 56 partly numbered pages in 14 leaves of Arches in a folder of Arches with the author's name and L'Essai Max Ernst blind-stamped on the front, followed by l leaf of Arches blind-stamped Bonjour Max Ernst on the front, accompanying the twenty-four prints and 1 further leaf of Arches, all contained in a pale green linen-covered Solander box with a circular cut-out filled with a motif in off-white pressed paper representing a wall. The publisher's imprint on the front and the title on the spine are both blocked in pale grey.
