In his textile designs Moore used media in a very sculptural way, building up the composition first by outlining the forms with pencil or a white crayon, then adding a watercolour wash to reveal the design, and highlighting the forms with pen and ink and gouache. He developed this drawing technique during the war to depict figures emerging from the darkness of the London Underground. This method gives a weight and substance to his designs for textiles – here with animal heads and enigmatic shapes and patterns appearing from a background of rich blue-grey.
