More Information

Notebook No.1 p.7. Moore probably carried this sketchbook with him on visits to the British Museum. The unidentified crouching figure sits on two forms copied from a Maya relief panel from the Temple of the Sun, Palenque, a cast of which was in the British Museum from the early 1900s. The verso sketches are after drawings by Michelangelo of between 1550 and 1560: the Virgin Annunciate (BM W.71) and studies of legs (BM W.73).
