More Information

The sketch at right of the top line, with its hollowed-out oval form and wide handle arching over it, may have been a starting point for Bird Basket 1939 (LH 205). When carving the piece Moore added two ends and a small central 'tongue' to give more complexity of pattern with the string. The form upper left resembles a wooden rigging block from a sailing vessel, probably picked up by Moore on a beach; the same object appears in HMF 1235.
