More Information

Moore said that this drawing was inspired by sculptures covered in damp cloths to keep the clay moist. Wilkinson (1977) suggests that its source may have been a group of Nupe tribesmen in northern Nigeria standing before two large veiled cult objects, a photograph of which was in a book on tribal art, Kulturgeschichte Afrikas by Leo Frobenius, 1933, owned by Moore.
