More InformationMoore was 41 at the outbreak of war. His cottage in Kent was a restricted area because of its proximity to the coast. Chelsea School of Art had closed so that he no longer had income from teaching. Stone and wood would soon become difficult to acquire. So Moore turned to drawing, and was persuaded by Kenneth Clark to become a War Artist. Other graphic work at the time included textile designs for Ascher, and book illustrations for The Rescue (See 0008810) and Prométhée (See 0008261).
