The inscription, written beneath the drawing and the wash, is puzzling. The only two sculptures in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, at this time were a Reclining Figure in lead (LH 192) and Mother and Child (LH 194), both of 1938 but neither bearing much relation to the figures on this sheet. Moore may have been referring to the elmwood Reclining Figure 1939 (LH 210), which had been offered to the museum in 1940 although it was later sold to Gordon Onslow-Ford (see comment on HMF 2036). A major retrospective of Moore’s work was held at MoMA in 1946.
