More Information

Moore seems to have arrived at a solution which for him satisfactorily symbolised the ethics of a university education. The six seated figures, each holding a book, are loosely based on figures rapidly delineated on the preceding sketchbook pages. Philip Hendy, who acquired the drawing, was Director of Leeds City Art Galleries and organised an exhibition there in 1941 of works by Moore, Graham Sutherland and John Piper.
