Red Notebook 1969-77 p.71 verso. Moore took this notebook when he went to Italy in July 1974. This and HMF 3217 record a visit to the church of San Francesco in Arezzo to see the Piero della Francesca frescoes (1452-66). The studies of heads here and in HMF 3217 verso are based on Piero's depiction of the queen's attendants in The Queen of Sheba Adoring the Sacred Beam and The Meeting between the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon; the townscape – based on Arezzo c.1460 – is from The Dicovery and Proof of the True Cross; and the skirted figures are from The Victory of Heraclius over Chosroes.
