The two elongated forms at the top appear in earlier sketches: HMF 1301 where the form is closer to a figure walking, twice in the middle row of HMF 1302 and at the top of HMF 1311. Just below them and to their left are two objects resembling spiral springs which Moore included in other pages of sketches. He identified them as sawn-up sections of a tree trunk, and clearly was sufficiently intrigued by some aspect of those forms to return to them on several occasions.
