More InformationThe sketch on the recto inscribed 'Learner carving' is the direct inspiration for Carving 1936 (LH 164) in travertine marble. Of his drawings of ideas for sculpture Moore often remarked that the first view he drew became the dominant thought in his mind when carving. The free-flowing sketches and handwriten on the verso suggest they were drawn in the late 1940's (see introduction to Sketchbook B on page 140).
