Without seeing the drawing it is impossible to tell whether Moore used black crayon or black ink to achieve the density of tone in the shaded areas. It is possible that the white lines were drawn in white wax crayon (although they may have been in gouache) and the shaded areas in black wax crayon. It was around this time that Moore first began using wax crayons.
