"I was asked to do a sculpture for the courtyard of Olivetti's new office building in Milan. I went out too Milan and met the architect and we looked together at the building then in construction . . . A lone lombardy poplar growing behind the building convinced me that a vertical work would act as the correct counterfoil to the horizontal rhythm of the building. The idea grew ultimately into the Upright Motives...."
