Moore seems to have been undecided as to which way up this should be seen since he signed it twice, once as vertical-format, once as a horizontal-format drawing. When it was selected for reproduction in the luxury edition of Hamlet he obliterated the vertical-format signature.See also HMF 80(50). When asked if he would consider illustrating a special edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Moore chose ten already existing drawings: HMF 80(50), 80(54), 80(71), 80(105), 80(162), 80(241), 80(242), 81(71), 82(7), 82(22). He himself suggested the titles for the drawings.
