Henry Moore was one of the most internationally celebrated artists of the 20th Century. While the human figure remained his primary subject, forms and principals from nature expanded his sculptural language - bones, stones, shells and plants spoke of growth, support, protection and decay.
This exhibition takes as its starting point the artist’s early fascination with the Neolithic site of Stonehenge and continued exploration of the upright abstract form. Moore first encountered the prehistoric monument under the moonlight as a young man in 1921. He was inspired by the grandeur of the idea – a powerful and primal work of art set in the landscape.
From outdoor works which articulate their environment and envelope the spectator, to an intimate display of objects from Moore’s home and studios, this exhibition presents a rich visual biography of Moore’s profound comprehension of the power of form and the relationship between art and human experience.
'Henry Moore. Sharing Form', is curated by Hannah Higham of the Henry Moore Foundation in collaboration with Mary Moore, the artist's daughter.
