2005-06 Bishop’s Stortford Museum at Rhodes, Henry Moore: The Elephant Skull
11 November 2005 - 03 January 2006
Bishop’s Stortford Museum has recently re-opened its doors as the new
Rhodes Arts Complex. This development, centred around the birthplace of
African prospector and politician Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902), also
incorporates the Thorleybourne Gallery as an important local venue for
the visual arts.
The inaugural exhibition, Henry Moore: Elephant Skull, focuses on Moore’s etchings inspired by the skull of an African elephant given to him by his Hampstead friends Sir Julian and Lady Juliette Huxley in 1966. Moore was fascinated by the skull and developed a number of graphic works exploring the internal and external spaces he found in this monumental object. These works were published as an album in 1970 by Gérald Cramer and the present exhibition includes a selection of graphics from the series, as well as small-scale sculptural works that echo the spaces and form of the skull, including Two Piece Points: Skull 1969 (LH 600).
