Lot 49. Mask, 1929 (LH 74) illust. with accompanying text, 'Masks, the fundamental obsession of 1929' written by Dr Alan Wilkinson. Within this text Wilkinson explores Moore's early influences as an inspiration for this alabaster carving, including the stone corbels outside of St Oswald's Church, Methley, as well as the effigy figures of Lord and Lady Welles within. He also notes the physical resemblances between the mask and Pre-Columbian, African and Oceanic sculpture that Moore had viewed before this period. The text also includes multiple comparative images such as: Man with the Broken Nose, 1863-64, Auguste Rodin, Drawing for Mask, 1929 (HMF 744), Mask, 1929 (LH 61), a Sandstone Seated Figure of Mictlantecuhtli, and a work of Giacometti's.
