120-121(1 illus) Henry Moore: one Drawing 1942.
Full-page colour reproduction of Reclining Figure with Pink Rocks, 1942 drawing with a commentary by Helen Raye. Although one of the studies for Reclining Figure, 1945-1946 elm wood, this figure set in a surreal landscape is a finished work of art in itself. Human figure and natural objects are combined in a way that foreshadows the later two-part reclining figures. Colour and texture are used in a subtle way and help to define form. The work was purchased from the Buchholz Gallery in 1943.
