The forms and imagery are outlined: Yet at some level more primitive than that of conscious recognition we respond to such forms in our own bodies. We become aware of forces which can be both exhilarating and frightening." Early and later works are compared and the shelter drawings figures are seen as "in a sense both the unborn in the womb and the dead in their winding-sheets". The work of the 1960s acquired "a new sense of the tremendous" being disturbing ambiguous confident and on an enormous scale. Bones became a new major influence ranging from the turbulent to the graceful and serene."
