Catalogues and illustrates 143 sculptures produced from late 1973 until early 1980. The introduction notes Moore's late style as dating from around 1960, and the most original and challenging sculpture being produced anywhere in the world" in the following 15 years. The work has seen a consolidation since 1973 drawing together "the threads of a long and various career" with the natural flow of sculptural ideas. Bowness discusses briefly a few of the works which stand out noting the large commissions the marble carvings and the continuation of the Reclining Figure and other themes."

7-8 BOWNESS Alan. Introduction.
(Outlines the 135 works documented which date between 1980 and 1985, together with a selection of works made during this time but conceived during the previous decade. "Titles should not be taken too seriously. Moore's is a very unliterary art". Moore was able to feel that he had completed his life's work although a sadness is seen in his last years. "Moore's sculpture always centered on a very limited number of subjects to which he returned again and again with new formal innovation. His art is one of durability permanence: a statement about the eternal relationship of man to man and of man to the natural environment in which we live. Fundamental is the image of woman as regenerator providing the continuity of human existence").

This volume excludes drawings as there were fewer of them and they related less directly to the sculpture than before. The introduction by Herbert Read is a new text, pointing out Moore's stylistic continuity, which at the same time contains a diverse stream of inspiration. The rigours of public commissions have caused new thinking on the integration of art and architecture, and have even introduced a wall theme into some of the figures. The archetype of the earth mother is discussed in the light of Neumann's Archetypal World of Henry Moore (See 0007016). Indeed Read suggests that Moore is plunging into themes as powerful and sinister as anything he has yet created. The sculptor's greatness lies in his power to realise these levels of consciousness onto plastic form.Almost all of the photographs were taken by the sculptor, or under his supervision.
A revised edition of this work was published in 1986."

Catalogues and illustrates all sculptures made by Henry Moore between 1964 and 1973. Drawings are now excluded from this series of volumes. In his introduction Alan Bowness outlines the different stages of Henry Moore's work, and stresses the creative energy implicit in the more than 100 works produced during 1964-1973, that is between the artist's 66th and 75th years. Themes central to the earlier work, particularly the Reclining Figures, continue into this late period. The major works documented in this catalogue are discussed by Bowness, as are his working methods. Finally the power of the 'late style' is placed in historical perspective as a natural progression of Moore's work, and is likened to the greatest work produced by giants of the arts in past ages. The introduction is based on a lecture first given at the opening of the Henry Moore Center at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1974 (See 0003846), and repeated, with modifications, as the Philip James Memorial lecture at Burleighfield House, and at the Universities of London and East Anglia.
