Description: Report of interview in issue on the 1930s. Henry Moore's shadow stalks like some mythical titan behind him trailing across some 50 years of art history and all four corners of the atlas." Although part of the 1930s Avant-Garde "Moore is no modernist and never has been. His sculptural work has always reflected the raw and religious imagination of primitive man. His is and always has been a more universal and enduring language than the international architect can ever hope to achieve... Moore looked to the primitive the architects to the progressive"."

Description: The romantic concept of material influencing the creative process evolved in the 20th century, principally through the direct carvings of Brancusi, and took a firm hold on popular imagination. Moore's indebtedness to Brancusi and primitive sources is noted, together with his inspiration from nature. The early emphasis on truth to materials lingers on in the appreciation of his sculpture, but the later bronzes show the manipulation of material to fit his ideas. Robert Hodgins sees the concept as a dogma and a dusty relic on the shelf of history when artists were limited in their choice of materials.
