More Information
The Valsuani Foundry was established by Claude Valsuani (1876-1923) in the first years of the twentieth century. Born in Milan, Claude had previously worked in the Hébrard Foundry in Paris. By 1908, his own foundry was based at 74 Rue des Plantes, Paris. His younger brother Attilio was also a bronze caster and both specialised in the lost-wax technique. After Claude’s death in Italy in 1923, his son Marcel took over the business.

The foundry was well-known for the quality and fine detail of its castings. Among the artists to use its services were Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Antoine Bourdelle, Pablo Picasso, Charles Despiau, Paul Troubetzkoy and Henri Matisse.

A number of works were cast by Valsuani for Henry Moore between 1945 and 1957, including Reclining Figure 1945 (LH 246); Three Standing Figures 1945 (LH 258); Rocking Chair No.1 1950 (LH 274); Rocking Chair No. 2 1950 (LH 275); Rocking Chair No. 3 1950 (LH 276); and eight casts of Seated Figure on Circular Steps 1957 (LH 437).
