More Information

In this version of the sketch lower left on HMF 2289b verso, Moore has concentrated the viewer's attention on Odysseus by turning the heads of Penelope, Euryclea and Telemachus towards him, at the same time creating a linear pattern linking the arms and hands of the three adults. The position of Odysseus's left forearm seems to underline his importance, and the composition is more telling, both artistically and psychologically, than the enlarged version HMF 2299.
