pencil u.l. one could treat it as a lesson in sculpture.; 1 (circled) Evolution of a statue –; & I would give a talk to/the students & staff &/the villagers on sculpture.; or as A.B.C of sculpture.; variation on a square; c. or do the big sculpture in middle/& then round it smaller evolutions &/variations on it; The painters' & sculptors' value to society is that they/open peoples (sic) eyes (to the wonders crossed out), to the/world, most peoples (sic) eyes are used only to (continued vertically c.r. stop them from bumping into things,/or to recognise (familiar crossed out) what they already know – whereas by the use of/ones (sic) eyes there is a tremendous visual excitement, pleasure & significance to be got out of life); l.c.r. I've been trying to think of/it in this way – by supposing/I was [in] complete control, say/that I was (a villa . . . crossed out) the dictator/or (. . .) of the village, with a/passion for sculpture – & that I wanted/the village to share the pleasure & meaning/I got from it. – then I might if I were completely/supreme & wealthy gather (. . .) together at different/times the (. . . crossed out) those pieces of sculpture that/from all periods & times excited me most &/put them into a good setting & (. . .)/talk about them once or twice – that is I should/let the fact of it being good sculpture come first/before, subject matter or anything else./for the appreciation of sculpture is in/itself part of education.
