Moore has created space by placing the foreground figure on a diagonal almost parallel to the picture plane, whilst the legs of the background figure make another diagonal into space at right angles to those of the first. Through the use of horizontal shading he has also created atmosphere and a believable space in which the figures can stand up and move around.
