More Information

This drawing has been retained in 1939 as originally catalogued. Both signature and date were added several years later and at different times. It is probable that Moore began these sketches in pencil at some date prior to 1939, also writing the pencil inscriptions then. The pen and ink drawing was added later, possibly in 1939 or even in the mid-1950s, whilst the pen and ink inscriptions create further problems; the long inscription in small handwriting characteristic of the early to mid-1930s refers to concrete constructions, the last of which was Composition LH 140 of 1934. The comment P.T.O see notes probably refers to the next page of the sketchbook rather than the verso, which bears two abstract heads and a guinea pig, almost certainly drawn in the mid-1950s.
