More Information

The inscription refers to S.W. (William) Hayter, one of a group of international artists who protested against Fascism and the suppression of culture. In 1938 a delegation including Moore, Hayter, Jacob Epstein and Stephen Spender was invited by the Spanish Republicans to visit Spain and report on the government's attitude to art and artists. They were refused permission to travel, and only Hayter and Spender later crossed the border without visas. The identity of 'Geoff' in the vertical inscription is not known but may refer to Geoffrey Grigson who, though a friend of Moore and Spender, was not a member of the protest group.
