In technique and subject-matter these twelve studies of heads drawn on cream writing paper sit uncomfortably with the drawings of monumental reclining figures set in rocky landscapes with which they were originally catalogued. Since they are close to a head drawn on a page from a 1958 sketchbook HMF 2979, it has been suggested that Moore, when adding signature and date many years after completing the drawing, inscribed it '38' rather than the intended '58'.
