The Square Forms Notebook is a grey-green paper-bound sketchbook containing 7 pages which are attached to the cover by two rusty staples. The first page is retained only by the staples; the corresponding back page has been removed. The front cover bears an inscription in pencil in Moore's hand at top centre; the inscription reads 'Promethee <crossed out> / 1934 or 35' The word Promethee refers to Andre Gide's poem of that name which Moore illustrated some twenty years later - he had probably picked up the Notebook believing it to be empty. Moore himself was uncertain of the exact date of the Notebook. Stylistically it seems to follow on directly after drawings like HMF 1106 which Moore signed and dated '34, albeit several years after the execution of that drawing. The two forms in the bottom line may be based on the shape of a blacksmith's anvil; many years later, Moore kept an anvil in one of his studios.
