In 1979 Moore wrote: 'The collage drawings are again ideas connected with sculpture, the backgrounds being used to give them density and reality, by suggesting an atmosphere around them. Starting from collage helped very much. Using bits of photographs of flints, cutting them out, changing them and fitting them together, gave something to start off with, although the collage part might end up greatly changed in the final drawing'.
